Johnson & Johnson Talc Case Results in $1.56 Billion Verdict for Mesothelioma Patient
A Maryland jury awarded $1.56 billion to a woman with peritoneal mesothelioma in a case against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and related companies. This is currently the largest award to a single person in lawsuits tied to the company’s talc-based baby powder.
The jury reached its decision in December 2025. It found J&J liable for not warning consumers about alleged asbestos contamination in its talc products. The jury also found the company withheld information about possible risks linked to its baby powder.

Details of the Maryland Verdict
In Craft v. Ahold Delhaize US Inc., the Baltimore City jury found J&J, Kenvue and several affiliated companies at fault. The woman’s legal team presented evidence that she used asbestos-contaminated talc products for many years. The team argued this exposure contributed to her mesothelioma diagnosis.
The jury determined J&J was liable for her cancer. In reaching that verdict, jurors credited arguments that the company did not adequately warn consumers and kept information about potential risks out of public view.
The verdict included compensatory and punitive damages. Johnson & Johnson said it plans to appeal the decision.
How Talc Products May Cause Mesothelioma
In this case, the woman reported long-term use of J&J’s talc-based baby powder. Natural talc deposits often are contaminated with asbestos, a known cause of mesothelioma.
If a talc product contains asbestos, tiny fibers may become airborne during use. A person may breathe them in without noticing. Over time, fibers can settle in the body and may contribute to diseases like mesothelioma.
Johnson & Johnson’s Ongoing Talc Litigation
J&J faces many lawsuits that involve claims of asbestos in talc products. The Maryland verdict follows other recent awards, including:
- October 2025: A California jury awarded $966 million to the family of a woman who died from mesothelioma linked to Johnson’s Baby Powder.
- July 2025: In Boston, Massachusetts, a jury awarded $42.6 million to a man who developed mesothelioma after years of using J&J talc products.
- June 2025: In Suffolk County, Massachusetts, a jury awarded $8 million to a woman with mesothelioma after decades of contaminated talc use.
As of publication, thousands of similar cases against J&J remain pending nationwide. This includes a talc multidistrict litigation (MDL) with 67,580 pending cases as of January 2026.
