Naval Station Everett

Among the more contemporary and modern naval facilities, construction began on Naval Station Everett in 1988 and concluded in 1992 when three Navy vessels docked at the newborn station for the formal opening of the pier. Naval Station Everett is located approximately 25 miles North of Seattle, with its primary purpose as accommodation for the USS Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, while also accommodating several smaller vessels. The primary pier was constructed at a cost of $56 million.

In addition to the primary pier, a groundbreaking was held August 10th, 1993 for the Naval Station Everett Support Complex, comprising some 52 acres directly off 136th Street in Smoky Point, Washington. Among the facilities the support complex featured were a commissary, exchange, family service center, thrift shop, education offices, bachelor officer quarters, craft shop/gear issue, chapel and religious education center, an auto hobby shop, ball fields and courts, fleet parking for personnel assigned to deployed Everett-based ships, and a 50-room Navy Lodge.

None of this would have been accomplished had it not been for the hard labor of the workers who are the backbone of shipyards today. Shipyard employees are exposed to many dangers both seen and unseen. One of the more prevalent unseen and little-understood dangers is the exposure to deadly toxins while involved in vessel construction or repair. Shipyard workers are especially susceptible to the deadly toxin, asbestos, as it was a cornerstone component of vessel construction. These vessels include those that may have been processed at Naval Station Everett. Are you a civilian who is now, or was employed by Naval Station Everett? If so, it is important to become aware of the dangers of asbestos exposure in shipyard environments.
