Navy Cargo Ship Mesothelioma

A cargo ship (also referred to as a freighter) is classified as any vessel that transports cargo, goods and other items from one port to another. The world’s reliance on cargo ships is still strong, with thousands of cargo ships traveling all over the world and serving a crucial economic role. In World War II, cargo ships were also instrumental, as they were used to provide supplies for U.S. forces all over the world. At least fifteen cargo ships served during WWII, including the USS Capricornus, which delivered cargo to U.S. ships in the Pacific theatre, and the USS Suffolk, which provided transportation for troops and goods in the waters near China and Japan.

Below you will find a list of cargo ships that operated during World War II, all of which contained high levels of asbestos found within insulation. Those who served aboard these and all other World War II-era ships are considered to be at a heightened risk of developing asbestos-related illness, including asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer.
