New York Asbestos Exposure Information

With the sheer scale of its industrial infrastructure, asbestos exposure was common in the State of New York. Few industries were immune to the harmful effects of asbestos exposure and hundreds of thousands of New York laborers were potentially exposed to asbestos and other toxins. Below are a few of the New York industries in which asbestos exposure was known to occur.

Shipbuilding and Repair

The shipyard industry of the greater New York City metropolitan area employed tens of thousands of laborers at the very height of ship construction during the Second World War. Shipbuilding facilities like the Brooklyn Navy Yard used asbestos in the construction of vessels and workers commonly encountered asbestos products in hull constructions, pipe linings, boiler coverings, and thousands of other products used in vessel construction.

Power Plants

Power plants required infrastructure that was resistant to heat buildup and nonconductive of electricity. Asbestos could provided both. As such, power providers like the Con Edison Power Plant used asbestos in wiring coverings, electricity generators, and related infrastructure. Those who installed or repaired asbestos products in power plants were often unknowingly exposed to microscopic and hazardous asbestos fibers.

New York airports, including the hubs at JFK International Airport and LaGuardia International Airports, were known sites of asbestos exposure. Often it was aircraft and aeronautic mechanics who were most at danger, as asbestos was common in aircraft. Asbestos was a generally durable mineral but it’s fibers were malleable and it could be added as an insulation component in aircraft. It could also be found in electrical installations and plumbing.

World Trade Center

The events of 9/11/2001 that shocked the world are still haunting New York City residents today. Numerous health complications have been associated with the Ground Zero dust that covered most of lower Manhattan. As a cause of what was dubbed after the attacks as the World Trade Center Cough, it is now known that hundreds of tons of asbestos were set into the air supply as the towers cam down. Some of the first responders have become ill as a result of asbestos exposure. Those in the vicinity may not know for several years if World Trade Center asbestos exposure will continue to haunt lower Manhattan for years to come.
