Mesothelioma News Asbestos Abatement Scheduled in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Nine buildings in downtown Beaver Dam, Wisconsin are cited for the removal of asbestos-containing materials. The plan, which includes asbestos removal and demolition of the nine buildings, as well as a small amount of restoration work and the removal of a parking garage, was voted in 4-2 by the operations committee, and now will go before the entire city council on March 16th for consideration. The city must acquire the nine properties before March 31st.

WDS Construction was hired on January 19th to perform environmental testing and figure out a maximum cost for the total downtown project. That guaranteed maximum cost totals $630,000. If the city is able to go ahead with the project, WDS will be in charge of hiring subcontractors and a licensed asbestos abatement company.

By law, asbestos materials must be reported to local environmental officials, and also must be removed by licensed asbestos abatement professionals. Exposure to asbestos, which is found in over 35 million buildings nationwide, may lead to the development of asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

The city is hoping to have asbestos remediation in all nine buildings completed as early as May.
