Veteran-Specific Resources
Veterans have a number of options when it comes to receiving medical, financial and legal support. The Veterans Administration should be a veteran’s first stop when trying to find assistance with the aforementioned issues.
Vet CentersOperated by the Veterans Healthcare Administration, the more than 230 Vet Centers across the country have been designed to treat veterans who have sustained combat injuries, are suffering from PTSD, or are in the process of readjusting to civilian life following their deployment. Vet Centers also treat military families, and there is one in every U.S. state.
DomicilliariesThese centers are made possible by the VA Domiciliary Residential Care and Treatment Program. Veterans who are struggling with medical injuries or psychiatric problems can receive treatment in a homelike setting along with other veterans. Domicilliaries are designed to foster relationships in a community setting, which the VA refers to as a “therapeutic community model.”
Women’s Healthcare ServicesBecause women are such an integral part of the military, the VA is working to increase the quality of services available to female veterans. Many VA hospitals offer gynecology services and a Women Veterans Program Manager can be found at every VA medical center to assist female vets with their treatment.
Veterans Integrated Services NetworkThe VA Healthcare System has been divided into 21 regions, known as Veterans Integrated Services Networks (VISNs). Veterans with questions about medical support can contact their VISN for answers or referrals.
Community Living CentersThere are over one hundred veteran Community Living Centers in the country. Veterans who are suffering from chronic conditions, such as dementia, or require regular medical treatments, like dialysis, often move into a Community Living Center to undergo treatment. These centers also offer injury and addiction rehabilitation services.
Veteran Medical CentersThe VA website provides a listing of all of their hospitals and medical centers. VA medical centers serve both men and women from all branches of service, including the Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. Some Reservists and National Guard personnel may also be eligible for care here. A veteran seeking medical treatment can receive services at any VA hospital.
