Mesothelioma Survival Rate
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, affecting the mesothelial cells which encompass the lungs and other body structures, such as the abdominal cavity and heart. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral that was used in industrial insulation compounds until the late 1970’s. Asbestos, upon inhalation or ingestion irritates the delicate tissue of the mesothelium, eventually laying the groundwork for mesothelioma.
Unfortunately there is no known cure for mesothelioma and while it is an extremely rare cancer, it is also an aggressive one. However, diagnosed with mesothelioma have live long beyond original their original prognosis through the combination of traditional and alternative therapies. Survival period will vary from patient and will likely be contingent on factors listed below.
Age at Diagnosis
The period between exposure to asbestos and the onset of mesothelioma and related symptoms can be many years and often exceeds a 30-40 year latency period, meaning mesothelioma is often diagnosed in those at an advanced age. Patients who are elderly may not be eligible for the same type of treatments as those diagnosed at a younger age, likely limiting their survival period. Many elderly patients however, have far exceeded their original prognosis and gone on to maintain a fine quality of life.
Stage of Disease
Mesothelioma is diagnosed in stages 1-4, with stage one being an extremely early-phase mesothelioma and stage four mesothelioma being highly advanced disease. Early diagnosis is paramount to a favorable prognosis and nearly always those who are diagnosed at with early stage disease are those eligible for aggressive treatments like surgical resection and comprehensive chemotherapy regimens.
A patient’s general health will dictate much of that particular patient’s prognosis. Patients in good health will often not only be able to deal with the symptoms the disease better, but also better manage symptoms of the potent chemotherapy and radiation treatments which often comprise a patient’s cancer treatment regimen.
Again, mesothelioma survival periods vary from patient to patient. Encouraging is that in recent years, many patients are living long than ever before due to new research in effective mesothelioma treatment regimens and procedures.
