Did you mean Mesothelioma?
“Mesothlioma” is a frequent misspelling of the word mesothelioma (“pronounced mez-uh-thee-lee-YOH-muh). Mesothelioma is a very atypical form of cancer that can manifest in the mesothelium, or lining, of the heart, abdomen, or lungs. It is most often found in the pleural lining of the lungs, and although there is no cure for mesothelioma, advances in treatment in the last decade are contributing to an increased survival rate in patients.
The only known cause of mesothelioma is previous asbestos exposure. Asbestos is found in a vast array of products, including attic insulation and drywall. Over 30 million residences and commercial buildings in the U.S. contain asbestos materials, and if individuals inhale or ingest airborne asbestos fibers, they may one day experience symptoms of an asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis or asthma.
It is important to limit your exposure to asbestos if at all possible. If you have been exposed, or know someone who has, it is crucial that you speak with a respiratory physician to determine whether or not you are likely to develop mesothelioma or a related illness.
