Did you mean Mesothelioma?

Mesothelione is a misspelling of the word “mesothelioma,” (pronounced meez-OH-thee-lee-oma). Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma develops in the thin layer of cells known as the mesothelium, which line the body’s internal organs. These cells lubricate the surface of the organs so that they can expand, contract, and other normal functions. The most common variety of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma, which occurs in the pleura surrounding the lungs and chest wall. Mesothelioma, however, is not limited to the pleura and can develop in the lining of the abdominal cavity and heart as well.

Asbestos was an insulation material used extensively in industrial and construction products as a fire retardant and insulator. Asbestos fibers, when inhaled, lodge in the mesothelial cells and create a harmful irritation of the surrounding tissue, causing malignant plaques to form on the surface of the mesothelium. Mesothelioma has no known cure but in recent years, physicians and cancer specialists have made strides in the pain management aspect of the disease, allowing patients to be much more comfortable than in the past.
