Did you mean Mesothelioma?
Mesothelanoma is a commonly misspelled version of the word “mesothelioma,” (pronounced meez-OH-thee-lee-oma). Mesothelioma is a rare malignancy affecting the mesothelial cells, which line the body’s internal organs and other structures. This membrane is only a few cells thick and is known as the mesothelium. Its function is to lubricate the surrounding area so that the organs may without restriction or friction within the body cavity. The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma, which develops in the mesothelial membrane which envelops the lungs and chest wall.
Mesothelioma is known only to be caused by previous exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a natural, fibrous mineral that was used in a number of different industrial products. It was primarily used as an insulation material but was also adept at preventing heat transfer and enhancing fire retardant qualities. Inhaled asbestos fibers irritate the mesothelial cells, causing a sustained inflammation over many years. Many of those who worked with asbestos in industrial shipyards, factories, or power plants have now been diagnosed with mesothelioma as a result of their exposure.
