Dr. Valerie Rusch is among the United States leading experts in the field of malignant mesothelioma. She currently serves as the Chief of Thoracic Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. She has written several publications and books on the treatment of malignant mesothelioma and is often consulted for her expertise on the subject.
Dr. Rusch received her Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 1971. From Vassar, she enrolled in the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she received her medical doctorate. She then participated in residency program in general surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center and her residency in cardiothoracic surgery, also at UWMC. In 1982, she was named faculty associate in thoracic surgery at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where she completed a fellowship program.
In addition to her expertise in patients of malignant mesothelioma, Dr. Rusch also has several years experience in the treatment of cancers of the chest wall, esophagus, lungs, and mediastinum. Her clinical experience lends well to thoracic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and upper pulmonary endoscopy.
Dr. Rusch has done extensive research into the molecular behavior of malignant mesothelioma and genetics of lung cancer in hopes of developing ways to identify thoracic cancer at an earlier stage. In addition to over 200 publications on the topic of mesothelioma and other thoracic cancers, Dr. Rusch has conducted several highly successful clinical trials among not only mesothelioma patients, but patients of other cancers as well.
