Dr. Keith Stelzer is the Medical Director for Radiation Oncology at the Celilo Center for Cancer Care in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Stelzer received his Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1985 and went on to receive his M.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine in 1989. He completed an internship in internal medicine at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland and a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Dr. Stelzer is a leading expert in the treatment of cancerous tissue with intensity modulated radiation therapy, a relatively new technology that allows doctors to develop a three-dimensional radiation beam to aim at cancer cell growth. This type of therapy maximizes the effectiveness of a radiation dosage, while minimizing the damage to healthy cells. This type of therapy has been used with some success in the treatment of malignant mesothelioma. Radiation therapy used to reduce malignant cell mass in mesothelioma can eliminate or slow the growth of the cancer while not affecting the important internal tissue by which it is surrounded.
