Dr. Claire F. Verschraegen is a professor of medicine and University of New Mexico Cancer Center in Albuquerque. She previously served on the faculty of the esteemed University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She is considered one the United States’ leading experts in the treatment of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.
Dr. Verschraegen has an eclectic professional training resume, with educational experiences in the United States and internationally. Her primary medical training was received at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, where she received her medical degree. She also completed her internship and residency in Belgium before arriving in the United States in 1988. She gained experience in internal medicine at the University of Texas and returned to Belgium in 1992 to complete a fellowship in oncology. Dr. Verschraegen was board certified in internal medicine in 1992 and medical oncology in 1995.
Although mesothelioma presents an important area of expertise for Dr. Verschraegen, she is also well versed in gynecological cancers, cancers of the appendix, and the emerging chemotherapy drugs which battle existing tumors. She has been published over dozens of times in books, professional papers, and peer reviewed professional publications. She is a member of the Gynecologic Cancer Society as well as a scientific board member of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Her current interests lie in a mesothelioma treatment cocktail of the chemotherapy drugs Alimpta® and Gemcitabine in patients of peritoneal mesothelioma.
