South Dakota
The economy of South Dakota is largely based on agriculture. This is not an industry that is known for using asbestos related materials. Because of this, exposure to asbestos has not been as common in South Dakota as it is in many other states. However, there are natural deposits of asbestos within the state. Any state with naturally occurring asbestos poses a risk to its citizens.
Asbestos Exposure in South Dakota
Power plants are the most common sites on which asbestos products have been discovered in South Dakota. Asbestos is often used as an insulation material within the machinery at these plants. Employees of power plants are most likely to have been exposed, but when asbestos is broken apart, it releases tiny fibers into the atmosphere, and these fibers will cling to most any surface. The fibers can then be unknowingly transported elsewhere, putting others at risk of exposure.
Asbestos is also found in insulation materials used in homes and businesses. If insulation containing asbestos is located in a room that people enter, it presents a threat to those people.
Removing Asbestos
Never attempt to remove asbestos on your own. It is dangerous and hazardous to your health. If you discover any asbestos on your property, contact a certified professional to remove it for you. Only a qualified professional should ever remove or dispose of any form of asbestos.
Look online or check your local yellow pages to find a company that is certified to work with asbestos. They will take care of the problem in a safe manner.
Asbestos related deaths in South Dakota
Exposure to asbestos can lead to lung diseases such as Mesothelioma and Asbestosis. Both of these diseases are very dangerous and can be fatal.
The EWG Action Fund conducted a survey between 1979 and 1999 to review the number of deaths caused by asbestos exposure in every state. During that time, South Dakota had 63 deaths reported. The top three counties for these tragedies were Minnehaha County, Pennington County and Beadle County.
Asbestos lawsuits in South Dakota
Asbestos exposure has been far less common in South Dakota than in many other states. However, many power plant workers and other individuals were exposed, and many have decided to file a lawsuit for this reason.
What to do if you have been exposed to asbestos
First off, seek medical treatment. If you have been exposed to asbestos, and choose to pursue legal action, you must be aware of the statute of limitations for your state. In South Dakota, the statute of limitations is three years for negligence/personal injury, and also for wrongful death.
