Nevada
There are no naturally occurring asbestos deposits or asbestos industry in Nevada. Unfortunately, that does not mean that Nevada is free from the hazards of asbestos exposure. As Nevada requires the same heavy industries as the rest of the country, so too do they possess industrial asbestos hazards. Most asbestos hazards in the state of Nevada are within the power generation industry, but they also exist in older building constructed prior to 1978.
Power Plants
Asbestos was among the most common materials used in power plants. Asbestos possessed strong insulation qualities and was used in pipe coverings, wire linings, and other heat-resistant capacities. Often, as these materials aged or were damaged, they released asbestos into the air supply, leaving all those in the vicinity at risk of inhalation. Asbestos could be found in nearly all facets of power generation and no occupation within the industry was truly safe from the hazard.
Older Homes and Buildings
Most asbestos products were banned in 1978 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission because of links to health complications. Unfortunately however, many asbestos containing materials still exist in homes built prior to 1980. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 80% of homes and building built prior to 1978 contain at least some asbestos-containing materials. As these products age or become damaged they become more hazardous.
Asbestos was banned because of a clear between asbestos exposure and malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer known only to occur in those with asbestos history. Those who are residents of Nevada and are concerned about a possible past asbestos exposure should consult with their physician and fill out the form on this page to receive a free mesothelioma and asbestos information pack.
