Federal Shipbuilding

The Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company was organized in 1917 at Kearny Point, New Jersey. The main purpose for organizing this type of shipyard as a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation was to construct steel ocean-going vessels. The company purchased 60 acres of land on Newark Bay and worked in conjunction with Chester Shipbuilding. Its popularity grew tremendously among operators of the United States Shipping Board and other areas. Its success is linked with providing cheap and reliable ocean transportation for a plethora of exports that brought the company to its peak.

Federal Shipbuilding mirrored the efforts of shipbuilding in New York. Its large complex was built very quickly and production of vessels was underway immediately. Its initial efforts and goals were large in order to meet the demands of cargo vessels for World War I efforts. Even before the war, The Federal Shipbuilding Company was recognized as one of the country's five most predominately used shipbuilders. The war efforts expanded their Federal Shipbuilding's capabilities and responsibilities to the country in the growing demand for ocean-going vessels.

Federal Shipbuilding's importance to war efforts escalated as materials and supplies needed to be transported efficiently. A new 160 acre facility created many of the cargo vessels that were used to carry supplies and materials to soldiers fighting in Europe. At this time, Federal Shipbuilding included over 2,000 workers. This company is recognized for building more destroyer vessels than any other shipbuilding company (other than Bath Iron Works) and also for its quick deliveries to those who purchased their goods. After its success in the shipyard business for more than thirty years, the company ceased operation in Kearney in 1949.

Most employees who worked in shipyard industries are at risk of developing lung diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. Asbestos was a commonly used material that is hazardous to human health if inhaled. Most boiler rooms and other areas of ships were contaminated with this material and fibers were let loose into the air. Some individuals do not know if they were contaminated by asbestos because their employers did not familiarize their employees with the dangers of asbestos or use precautions to protect their health. If you or a loved one were employed at the Federal Shipyard or were involved in the areas of plumbing, insulating or boiler room maintenance, it is important to get a complete physical by a doctor to determine whether or not mesothelioma is a risk. Most patients are entitled to compensation through legal protection and other resources available.
