The First Stop After a Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Fire

Fire is an alarmingly common hazard faced by nearly everyone. While certain precautions can be taken against fire, it still affects thousands of people a day. Among the more pronounced effects of fire upon people is loss or damage of property. Many people would think that once the fire is extinguished, then it is safe to pick up what you can and attempt to rebuild your life. While in theory this is what you should do, there are inherent hazards that remain among the ashes and people should be aware of them.

Among the more common hazards faced by people on the scene of fire-damaged property is asbestos exposure. More than likely, if a building or home was constructed prior to 1980, it was probably built with asbestos containing materials. When these materials become damaged by temperature extremes and other factors during fires, it is more likely the asbestos fibers will become released into the local air supply. These fibers are microscopic in size, meaning you can inhale them and not be aware you are doing so.

Damage restoration companies are able to discern which product they are able to remove safely depending on the risk, and also sub-contract the proper asbestos abatement company or allow the home/building owner to contract one of their choosing. After the site is declared safe, these contractors will ensure that the home/building is repaired to pre-fire conditions. Or, in the case of a total loss, these companies will assist in the removal of rubble and even the rebuilding process.

Proper clean-up is essential to not only rebuilding, but also ensuring the area is free from toxins like asbestos. If asbestos is inhaled, the fibers can cause a chronic inflammation in the lung and surrounding tissue, leading to fatal disease that can manifest many years down the road. Proper cleanup efforts after a fire are the first step in protecting oneself against this hazard.
