USS Farragut
The USS Farragut was a destroyer built for the United States Navy. She was the fourth out of five naval vessels to bear the name. The various vessels have all honored the name of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (1801-1870). This particular vessel was built in 1932, the first destroyer ordered by the United States Navy in nearly 13 years. Her keel was laid down and she was launched by Bethlehem Shipbuilding of Quincy, Massachusetts.(Now known as Fore River Shipyard) Farragut was commissioned in June of 1934, with Commander E. Buckmaster in command.
Since had it been some time since the United States Navy launched a naval destroyer, most of Farragut's early tenure was devoted to development operations, predominantly out of her homeport at Norfolk, Virginia. Among her first official duties was transportation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in March of 1935. In April, she would sail to San Diego, California to become the flagship of Destroyer Squadron 20. Throughout the remainder of the 1930's, Farragut served mostly between the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and the Caribbean, conducting training exercises in each.
