Navy Transport Ships

A transport ship was designed to ferry cargo between two or more locations and also provided repair services to damaged U.S. Navy ships. Transport vessels served a similar purpose as cargo ships and tankers. The USS Austin LPD-4 was one of the transport ships that provided assistance to other military vessels during World War II.

All former crewmembers who worked aboard transport ships may have been exposed to asbestos while on board. Asbestos, found within piping insulation and other materials, often became airborne, and crewmembers on board were at a heightened risk of inhaling these fibers. If inhaled, the crewmembers often found themselves suffering from an asbestos-caused disease, such as mesothelioma, as many as 50 years after their initial exposure.
