Thoracentesis

When a person is diagnosed with lung related issues such as asbestosis and pleural mesothelioma, there are often complications with normal breathing functions. Often times, with those who suffer from pleural mesothelioma, there is fluid buildup in the cavity around the lining of the lungs. This pleural fluid can cause inflammation in the area and difficulty breathing in the patient. Fortunately, there are methods of removing the fluid and determining the cause of excess fluid. One of the most widely used methods of removal is through thoracentesis. Thoracentesis is a method of removing the liquid that has been built up and is causing the patient pain and inability to breathe properly.

Before the procedure begins, there is usually a consultation between the patient and the doctor. This type of meeting handles any concerns that the patient may have and also determines whether or not medications or other treatments can interfere with thoracentesis. Also, the patient is asked to sign a consent form before the doctor can remove the fluid. This is standard paperwork that often accompanies diagnostic procedures. The doctor begins by giving the patient a mild sedative in order to keep the patient without discomfort during the procedure. He or she then inserts a needle (usually attached to a catheter) into the chest wall. The fluid becomes collected and is send to a lab to determine what exactly it is, and if it could be potentially harmful to the patient. With the removed liquid, patients should be able to notice a difference in their breathing pattern and comfort level. This is becoming a routine procedure for those who have liquid buildup issues related to mesothelioma. This is not a cure, and nor does it determine whether or not the fluid will build up again.

There is a fluid present in between the lining of the lungs. This is normal. Heavy amounts of fluid can be caused by other things other than mesothelioma, such as infection heart failure and other types of inflammation. In these cases, doctors can determine which method of treatment can go in conjunction with thoracentesis to help the patient. Unfortunately, with mesothelioma cancer patients, doctors are unable to use it as a method for eliminating cancer cells.
