The First Stop After a Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Oncology-Nursing Specialist

Oncology nurses have one of the most demanding jobs in their specialized area. These types of nurses are responsible for helping to treat patients who are terminally ill. For example, patients who have severe forms of cancer are often looked after by an oncology nursing specialist. Working along side with an oncologist, these LPs are responsible for checking in on the patient's status daily, prescribing certain medications to make them more comfortable, as well as helping put together a treatment process that will be most effective in their battle with the disease.

There have been many different types of research for cancer treatment and care. By having nurses have a concentration in oncology more patients are able to receive the specific care they need by a highly trained professional for their specific disease. There are different portions of oncology, such as gynecology and pediatrics and nurses can be certified in any of these fields. Cancer oncology, however, is a growing portion for those becoming involved in learning how to treat and effectively eliminate cancerous cells from a patient.

One of the areas where oncology nursing specialists are becoming more apparent is outside of the hospital working for programs such as Hospice. Home health care is becoming increasingly popular for individuals with terminal illnesses who wish to live out their dying days with their family in the comfort of their own home. Oncology nursing specialists are able to come to the person's home and assist them with treatment, medication and keeping them comfortable. This allows the patient have a person who specializes in their care bring the proper facilities and treatment processes directly to their home. This does not mean, however, that there are less nurses working with people bedside in hospitals. There seems to be a solid balance between patients who wish to stay at home for their treatment and dying process and those who remain in the hospital. The increasing amount of trained nurses for cancer patients is steadily increasing today and will help patients during mesothelioma treatment.
