Larynx
The larynx is the part of the body that acts as the airway into the lungs. It also has another vital function of helping people communicate through vocalizations. The larynx has a distinct skeletal structure that forms strong muscles around it to perform the function that it is designed to do. The pitch and volume of a person's voice is determined by the normal function of the larynx. The larynx is located below the pharynx where it splits into the esophagus and the trachea. Being such a small portion of the body makeup, it consists of more than five muscles and cartilage that assist in its functioning.
The larynx is responsible for generating sound and manipulating the tones and pitches of the voice. It is also important for the process of swallowing, as well. When food is consumed, the larynx closes to make sure that nothing gets into the lungs that could potentially cause obstruction. This is also where people experience a strong cough reflex when food becomes lodged. By the larynx moving upward in this process, the lungs are protected and the person is able to digest different kinds of things that they consume safely.
There are potential instances where the larynx cannot function properly. Symptoms that a patient may discover with problems regarding this bodily organ include, pain in the throat, loss of voice, or breathing difficulties. These symptoms can be signs of more serious types of cases that include ulcers, polyps, acute laryngitis, or weakening of the vocal cords. It is important that a person take these symptoms seriously, even if they are not that severe. There are certain procedures and medications that doctors can assist with fixing the problem.
There are certain situations, however, that are more serious and requires continuous treatment. Many do not realize that larynx cancer can develop and affect the different measures for swallowing, talking and protection against the lungs. The material asbestos has been linked for many years to mesothelioma and other types of lung disease, but what doctors and scientists have discovered is that larynx cancer can be contracted through the exposure to the hazardous airborne fibers. This is true because the larynx also assists with the breathing process. The microscopic fibers are so small they can make their way through the larynx into the lungs even if it is functioning properly. The symptoms and side effects are similar to mesothelioma where it is not discovered for many years after the exposure.
