Benign

Benign refers to a condition that is not life threatening or affectING a person's health in any harmful way. Most conditions that are benign have to do with tumors that are found in the body. The term benign is also used to describe the biological behavior of the tumor. Tumors that are benign are often harmless.Other tumors can be studied to show whether or not they have cancerous tendencies. The doctor will remove the mass to ensure that it does not develop into anything more serious. Some instances where tumors are found to be benign are in the breast, the lungs, brain etc. If a tumor is benign, it is unlikely that it will come back or spread to other parts of the body after the doctor has treated or removed it. Usually, the body keeps a balance of dividing healthy cells, but when the divisions become irregular, tumors develop. If the tumor is located in a region that can upset a vital organ, it is likely to become malignant and spread.

A benign tumor is essentially different from an abscess or a cyst that could develop in a person's body. A mass that is benign is created because of an overgrowth of cells, whereas a cyst or abscess is considered an infection of a skin nodule. Also, a benign tumor has distinct symptoms that abscesses and cysts do not exhibit. These symptoms include lumps, pain, swelling, and inflammation. It is not fully known what causes these types of inflammation, but health complications that the person may have promote their development. To determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant (cancerous) a doctor may perform a biopsy, which is the most efficient way to reach the results needed for diagnosis. The most important aspect of tumor treatment is to find out the location, size, and extent of the tumor. Most patients are able to consult their doctor about different options for removal and prognosis. The best prevention for any sort of tumor is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, weight, diet and exercise.
