The First Stop After a Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Many individuals within the United States suffer from acute and chronic pain. Fortunately, doctors and scientists have determined certain methods in order to control and even eliminate pain. Methods are often times used in conjunction with other treatments and medications to control both acute and chronic pain. One of the most commonly used methods is Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation or TENS.

This method of pain relief is has become so popular with doctors and patients because it is non-invasive, non-addictive and has no known side effects. TENS therapy works by sending an electrical stimulation to certain nerves of the body. This painless electrical wave is able to be transmitted to almost any of the area that a person may be experiencing pain. What makes this method of pain relief so unique is that the electrical current is able to produce heat which helps alleviate discomfort of stiffness, immobility and unbearable pain. Doctors use this method of pain relief to increase endorphins in the body, which are a natural form of pain relievers. There are certain instances where patients have illnesses that require the use of medication and other forms of treatment (such as exercise therapy) to help them cope with the pain. This will not alter the effectiveness of the TENS process.

Patients are able to receive TENS through a physical therapist that is able to professionally administer the therapy. At the session, the physical therapist places patches on the skin where the pain is occurring. The therapist has a stationary stimulator at the location where the therapy is being given. For acute pain, TENS can be used as topical steroid application that is transmitted through the skin. Some patients, however, have a difficult time making it to TENS sessions or live too far from a nearby facility. In these cases, portable simulators are given to the patient that can be worn around the waist. This type of portable stimulator is given by prescription through a physician. This way, a patient is able to turn the pain relief on and off when needed. When given a portable device, it is important that the patient is given solid training on how to run the equipment properly. This type of treatment is often used on a trial base because this method is not effective for everyone. Patients who have pacemakers to help their heart should avoid using TENS therapy.
