Legal Glossary - M
Motion - A motion is a formal request made to a judge for an order or a judgment. A motion may be made for several reasons - for a postponement, dismissal, re-hearing, modification of an order, and much more. Most motions must be in writing stating the legal reasons for the request for the motion. The other party's attorney must also receive notification of the request for a motion. During a trial, motions may be made verbally.
