Paulsboro Asphalt Refinery Citgo

The refinery in Paulsboro , New Jersey is owned by the Citgo Corporation. Citgo was created by the Cities Service Company, and became a well known brand of gasoline provider in 1965.

Asphalt is the major product that is produced at this facility. It is shipped all across the East Coast, and primarily used to construct and resurface streets and major roadways. The asphalt is also sometimes utilized as a roofing material and for emulsions products.

In March of 2008, Citgo's operation was acquired by NuStar Energy L.P. At the time, the NJ facility was producing up to 74,000 barrels on a daily basis. NuStar features over 9,063 miles of pipeline which can be used to transport the oil to their various facilities, and they have many large tanks for storage. The completion of this deal will provide a great expansion for the company, and it also includes a second asphalt refinery based out of Savannah, Georgia. This plant produces 30,000 barrels per day.

NuStar Energy L.P. which should prove to be very beneficial for them. One advantage they will have over Citgo is that they will not have to deal with the problem of materials made out of asbestos within the facility. Like many other refineries, the plant in Paulsboro utilized many products that had asbestos in them for several years. For a while this was a common ingredient in items that were used in high temperature environments such as refineries. It was later discovered that asbestos was actually extremely hazardous to the health of anyone who came into contact with it.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring material that is comprised of tiny fibers that can float in the air. They are not able to be seen by the human eye, and that makes them easy to inhale. People will breathe the fibers in without even realizing it, and when this happens the fibers will remain in the body for many years, where they can cause a large amount of damage. This can lead to serious and ongoing respiratory problems, and a form of cancer called Mesothelioma that can be fatal.

The use of asbestos products in work places was such a problem for many years that it has led to hundreds of class act lawsuits against employers who knew of the danger, and did not actively attempt to remove the hazardous material. If you were an employee of the Citgo Paulsboro Asphalt Refinery, make an appointment with your doctor for an examination, and explain that you may have been exposed to asbestos.
