HDG International Group Refinery
HDG International Group is a privately owned enterprise that manages a diverse group of companies dedicated to the energy industry. They are primarily involved in the production of petroleum based products such as gasoline and oil, and they run an oil refinery in Perry, Kentucky. This plant has the ability to produce up to 195,500 barrels of crude oil on a daily basis.
The plant in Perry has continued to operate without major incident since it was originally founded. There has, however, been one problem that hit the facility and it's employees. During the early years of the plant's history, there were several products in place that contained a asbestos, a naturally occurring material that was used as a building block for insulation and other items commonly found in industrial work sites. At one time these products were very popular because they had a remarkable ability to survive in extreme temperatures, such as those created by the oil refining process. Most every refinery in the United States used similar products for years, but over time studies were conducted on asbestos, and it was found to be a toxic substance.
Asbestos poses a serious health hazard because it can be breathed in by people without them even realizing what has happened. The material is comprised of millions of tiny fibers that cling together, but over time they may separate as the products they are found in start to break up and crumble. As this occurs, the fibers are released into the atmosphere and become an unnoticeable part of the air inside the refinery.
Workers who inhaled bits of asbestos are likely to develop severe respiratory disorders over a long period of time. They may also develop a life threatening type of cancer known as mesothelioma. It often takes years for signs of these conditions to become obvious, so any person who worked for HDG International Group at their Kentucky refinery is urged to contact their healthcare provider as soon as possible to set up an appointment to be checked out.
