Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
A self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA, is an incredibly important safety implement for firefighters. An SCBA can protect firefighters from inhaling asbestos, a dangerously toxic mineral that is most likely present in the majority of residences and other buildings that were constructed prior to 1980.
An SCBA provides breathable air for firefighters while they are fighting a fire and are surrounded by toxic smoke and chemicals. An SCBA is generally comprised of three integral parts: a high-pressure tank, regulator, and a mouthpiece. The tank provides non-toxic, breathable air; the regulator controls the air output, and the mouthpiece adequately covers the firefighter’s nose and mouth to prevent the inhalation of toxic gases, as well as airborne asbestos fibers.
It is imperative that firefighters utilize an SCBA that has been approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or NIOSH. This will ensure that the SCBA has been certified for use and will offer the best protection for firefighters.
Firefighters must wear their SCBA at all times while battling fires. However, what many firefighters may not consider are the implications of removing their SCBA after the fire has been extinguished. Rubble and debris may still release asbestos fibers into the air, putting firefighters at risk for inhalation even after the fire has been put out and the smoke has cleared. It is crucial that firefighters, as well as other emergency responders, wear an SCBA at all times when working in an area that may contain asbestos.
