Phenanthrene
Phenanthrene is a hydrocarbon gas comprised of benzene, and is released into the air by U.S. oil refineries. If inhaled, Phenanthrene can cause severe respiratory system damage and can also irritate the internal organs.
Phenanthrene output is regulated by the Clean Air Act and is included on the federal government’s list of hazardous substances. Alabama, Indiana and Montana have the highest levels of Phenanthrene pollution, and several U.S. oil refineries are included on the list of the top 100 Phenanthrene producers, including the Shell Refinery in Martinez, CA, the ExxonMobil Refinery in Baytown, TX, and the ConocoPhillips Refinery in Ponca City, OK.
