Mercury
Mercury is an oil refinery waste product that is released during the refining process. It is one of the most harmful refinery waste products and can cause severe health problems if inhaled or absorbed by the body.
Mercury can damage the respiratory system, as well as the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and reproductive systems. Women of childbearing age must be especially cautious of mercury, as it can cause serious birth defects. In addition to harming the above body systems, mercury poisoning can also lead to neurological damage and can shut down kidney function.
Louisiana, South Dakota and West Virginia are the most mercury-polluted U.S. states. Mercury output is regulated by the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Clean Water Act.
