Lead

Lead is admitted into the atmosphere as an oil refinery waste product at a rate of over 1 million pounds per year. A known carcinogen, lead may cause various types of cancer, including lung cancer.

In addition to cancer, exposure to harmful levels of lead may also disrupt respiratory function and negatively affect the reproductive system, the endocrine glands, the gastrointestinal system, and the kidneys. It may also cause neurological damage.

Alabama, Idaho and Ohio lead the U.S. in lead pollution. Output of lead waste by oil refineries is regulated by the Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
