Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid is released by oil refineries in gaseous form. Hydrochloric acid is extremely corrosive and can have negative effects on the skin, eyes, kidneys, intestines and other internal organs. It is also a musculoskeletal toxicant, which indicates that it could potentially damage bones and muscles, and can seriously harm the respiratory system.

Over 1 million pounds of hydrochloric acid are released into the air on an annual basis. Ohio, North Carolina and Georgia contain the highest levels of hydrochloric acid. The output of hydrochloric acid waste is regulated by the Clean Air Act.
