Chromium Compounds

Chromium is a known carcinogen that is released by oil refineries in the form of gaseous waste. Chromium is odorless and tasteless, so it is virtually impossible to detect. Certain chromium compounds, such as hexavalent chromium and pentavalent chromium pose serious human health risks.

Chromium is a known carcinogen, which indicates that it can cause certain types of cancer. It may also irritate the kidneys, gastrointestinal system, the skin and eyes and respiratory function. In addition to causing cancer, chromium may also lead to mental health issues, including senility.

Texas, Ohio and Kentucky release the most chromium into the environment on a yearly basis. Output of chromium and chromium compounds in the form of oil refinery waste is regulated by the Clean Air Act and is included on the federal government’s list of toxic chemicals.
