Ammonia
Ammonia is released as an oil refinery waste product in gaseous form. It has a distinct odor and is both caustic (corrosive) and is considered to be an environmental hazard.
Ammonia is a gastrointestinal toxin and may also have negative affects on the reproductive system. It may also cause irritation in the respiratory tract if inhaled. Texas, Louisiana and Ohio are the U.S. states with the most ammonia pollution, and ConocoPhillips is listed in the top 100 ammonia-waste producers in the country.
Ammonia pollution is regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Clean Air Act.
