Home Improvement and Asbestos Exposure

As empowering as it is for many people to take on small and large tasks around their homes and businesses, dangers exists that many are unaware of. Among these dangers is asbestos. Many view asbestos exposure an issue of the past when, in fact, it represents a clear and present danger within nearly 80% of structures built prior to 1980. The following projects may involve asbestos and those who are attempting to tackle them should be aware of the possibility. In most cases, a contractor will be able to identify potentially hazardous situations and proceed with them appropriately.

Tile Flooring

When in the process of pulling up existing tile flooring for removal or replacement, it is highly likely that the adhesives will require destroying the existing tiles to remove it. Many tiles installed prior to 1979 contained asbestos, as it was resistant to heat and temperature extremes, while also enhancing the over durability of the tile. Contractors will likely be able to discern which tiles are safe to remove and which may contain asbestos. In either case, using a professional for this project is likely the homeowner’s best bet.

Drywall Projects

When in the process of removing older walls or other drywall installations, it is possible asbestos could be released. Asbestos was used in drywall compounds to make the walls more fire-retardant. Slight disturbances of older pieces of exposed drywall could possibly release these asbestos fibers. For this reason, it is best to utilize a professional when handling older pieces of drywall, particularly if they are likely to damage them in the removal.

Insulation

Insulation is among the most common asbestos containing products found in homes and buildings today. When replacing older insulation, it is best to consult with a professional about how old the existing insulation is. If installed prior to 1980, it in all likelihood contains asbestos and should be handled only by those trained and certified in the removal of these materials.

Ceiling tiles

Replacing older drop-ceiling tiles becomes necessary as they often discolor and begin to deteriorate over time. It is best to consult with a professional about the age of the existing ceiling tiles before attempting this on your own. Older ceiling tiles required fire and heat resistant qualities because of their proximity to light fixtures.
