The First Stop After a Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Complications associated with do-it-yourself asbestos abatement

Asbestos is a very dangerous material to handle. If the asbestos is not disturbed in your home, there is no reason to remove it. Asbestos that is left alone usually does not cause harm to individuals living in the home. Asbestos becomes dangerous when particles become airborne. There are often complications and health risks from performing do-it-yourself abatement. Hiring a professional abatement company is less risky because they usually have specific equipment and more experience with removing asbestos safely. Those who take on the process by themselves run the risk of contaminating themselves, their families and those that are involved in the removal process. If particles become loose, there are serious health risks involved years after exposure.

One of the dangerous aspects do-it-yourself abatement is that some removal techniques cause more dust to be accumulated in the room than before the process started. Also, not keeping the material wet enough may send loose particles into the air. This runs the risk of not containing all the material and disposing of it properly. Not wearing the proper protective garments can also pose a risk of fibers becoming lodged in the clothing and then contaminating clean areas and other individuals. Fibers can then spread to other areas of the home that were not contaminated. If you are completing an asbestos removal job on your own and feel as though you are not sure if loose particles came into the air, be sure to check with a local professional team to assist you in the process.

Asbestos and diseases related to asbestos exposure have been heavily researched since the beginning of the 1980s. If asbestos is inhaled, it can cause severe health problems, primarily in the lungs and chest cavity. Almost all cases of asbestosis and mesothelioma are associated with fiber ingestion or inhalation on the job site. Even though working on abating an area in the home does not mean there is continual contact it still poses a risk for loose particles to be inhaled. Unfortunately, effects of that exposure do not show forth until many years later. All types of asbestos related diseases are found at later stages and are often resistant to treatment and medications. Even if you are careful with your home abatement project, you still lack the knowledge that can keep your safety as a top priority. When in doubt, contact a professional.
